Just like an engine, suspension components have internal metal wear surfaces, so clean and fresh oil is crucial.

After 20 to 30 hours it's important to change your fluids to maintain shock control.

Especially with racing, your shocks lose their dampening and hamper your performance.
Under racing conditions, after 20 hours, you should be changing your fork and shock oil.

On dirt bikes, this general rule goes for other suspension related components such as swingarm and linkage bearings which need to be greased for proper maintenance.
